Brief Description of San Augustine
County
- San Augustine County is in the
pine belt of East Texas and is bounded by Shelby County on the north, Sabine
County on the east, Nacogdoches and Angelina Counties on the west and south.
Native Indian tribe: Ais 1716:
Mission Nuestra Senora de los Dolores de los Ais built by Father Antonio
de Jesus Margil 1800-1835: Spanish and Mexican governments refused to grant
land to settlers 1827: District of Ayish Bayou organized 1834: Municipality
of San Augustine created; included present San Augustine, Sabine and Shelby
counties as well as parts of Panola, Newton, and Jasper counties 1837: San
Augustine County organized
