In 1847, Blackstone Hardeman, Jr. opened a general merchandise store in Melrose, Texas. Just prior to the Civil War in 1861 Lyne T. Barret became Hardeman's junior business partner. The Hardeman & Barret General Merchandise Store was well-stocked with a variety of goods including groceries, materials by the yard, hats, shoes, linens, tableware, kitchenware, and other hardware goods. Stock for the store came from New Orleans from whence it was brought overland by wagons.
