The second oldest literary club in Texas, the Cum Concilio Club, was organized in January 1894. Originally, the purpose of the club was primarily social, with a limit on the roster of fifteen members. Later the membership limit was raised to twenty, where it stands today. The club is a medium for social and cultural enrichment as well as literary effort. It uses a diversified form of program in which each member contributes to the edification and enjoyment of every other member. The Cum Concilio Club has often been publicly recognized for its outstanding achievements through the years. Some of these include: 1) putting the iron fence around Oak Grove Cemetery, 2) insuring the preservation of the Old Stone Fort, 3) participating in volunteer efforts during the two World Wars, 4) landscaping the school campus where the historic Nacogdoches University stands, 5) starting the first public library in Nacogdoches, 6) organizing "The Heritage Club", and 7) contributing clothing to needy persons in Greece and Austria. Also, many awards for exemplary achievements have been received by the club from the Federation of Women's Clubs, of which it is a member.
The collection contains the official records of the Club including the constitution, by-laws, correspondence, minute books, and treasurer's book as well as newspaper clippings, yearbooks, and scrapbooks. Additions to the collection are anticipated.
