The AARC Math Program is designed to assist students in overcoming the difficulties they are having with mathematics. By helping students enrolled in courses that have high drop/failure rates, we hope to improve students' success in these courses and contribute to improved retention.
Tutoring by AppointmentNotice of registration is posted to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics where instructors give math students a brief description of our math tutoring program. In addition, registration information is always available from the AARC staff. Students who know they will need assistance in a course should carefully note the registration date and sign up for tutoring at the first opportunity. Students who make such appointments receive one hour of scheduled help each week.

There is a high demand for math tutors and, despite our best efforts, a tutor may not be available when initially requested. Those who are not able to get a tutor on their first attempt should sign our waiting list as there will be openings will become available during the semester.
Math Program tutoring is for the following courses:
In addition, math tutors help students prepare for the THEA (Texas Higher Education Assessment) exam, GRE (Graduate Record Exam) and occasionally tutor other math related courses on demand.
The name Walk-in Table suggests that no appointments are needed and this is indeed the case. Many students have schedules that preclude weekly appointments; others need only occasional help during the semester. Some would like more than one hour of assistance during the week. The Math Walk-in Table is set up to meet the needs of such students. It is open during AARC's regular tutoring hours and quite a few students prefer it to the more intensive one-on-one appointments. Students can drop by with a five-minute problem or stay with us for as long as is necessary to gain command of their math concepts and problems. Students who already have an appointment each week often supplement their efforts with additional time spent at the Walk-in Table, but no appointment of any kind is necessary to use the Walk-in Table facilities.
When there is sufficient interest in an individual math class, the AARC sometimes sponsors a math study group for that class. The dynamics of such instructional assistance are different than one-on-one tutoring and some students find such group participation quite profitable. Many, but not all, such groups are part of the AARC's Supplemental Instruction program.
Peer tutors are hired to work in the AARC Math Program because:
The responsibilities of math tutors include:
Those who are interested in employment as peer math tutors should come by the AARC and request an application from the reception desk. Currently, tutors are paid $8.25 per hour to start and it goes up according to their level of training.
